Hyderabad Wastewater Rules Tightened After Drain Blockage
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has stepped up enforcement against illegal wastewater disposal after penalising a commercial establishment in Banjara Hills for releasing wastewater onto a public road, an incident that disrupted the local drainage system and caused inconvenience to residents. The action reflects growing efforts to strengthen urban sanitation and protect civic infrastructure.
According to the Water Board, the violation occurred during the cleaning of an underground water sump at a commercial premises on Road No. 10 in Banjara Hills. Wastewater generated during the maintenance operation was allegedly pumped directly onto the street instead of being disposed of through approved methods, resulting in blocked roadside drains and reduced stormwater flow. Following a public complaint, officials inspected the site, imposed a penalty of ₹15,000 on the establishment and seized the dewatering pump used during the operation. Authorities also cautioned both the business and the private contractor involved, warning that repeated violations could invite stricter enforcement. Urban sanitation specialists say improper disposal of wastewater into public drains poses a wider challenge for rapidly growing cities. Besides obstructing drainage infrastructure, such practices can increase flood risk during rainfall, damage road networks and create unhygienic conditions in densely populated neighbourhoods.
Experts emphasise that routine commercial maintenance activities, including sump cleaning and dewatering operations, should follow established environmental and municipal regulations.
