Hyderabad Flyover Spaces To House Power Substations

Hyderabad: Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) is planning to utilise space beneath selected flyovers and steel bridges in Hyderabad to establish compact indoor power substations, a move aimed at strengthening the city’s electricity distribution network while addressing the growing challenge of securing land for urban infrastructure.

The initiative comes as electricity demand continues to rise across the Hyderabad metropolitan region, driven by rapid residential growth, commercial expansion and increasing industrial activity. Officials believe that repurposing technically suitable spaces beneath existing transport infrastructure can accelerate the development of new substations without requiring additional urban land. As part of the proposal, senior officials recently inspected a site beneath the Nayani Narasimha Reddy Steel Flyover near the Musheerabad bus depot, where a 33/11 kV indoor substation is being considered. The planned facility would include high-voltage incoming supply, outgoing distribution feeders, underground cable infrastructure and integrated safety systems designed for modern urban power networks. Unlike conventional substations that require larger land parcels, the proposed facilities are expected to operate as compact, unmanned installations equipped with remote monitoring technology. Through Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) integration, engineers would be able to monitor electrical equipment, network performance and operational status from central control systems, improving reliability while reducing on-site operational requirements.

Energy infrastructure experts say the proposal reflects an emerging trend in dense metropolitan areas where utilities increasingly integrate infrastructure with existing urban assets. Making productive use of underutilised spaces beneath flyovers can reduce land acquisition costs while enabling quicker expansion of essential public utilities in locations where conventional sites are difficult to secure. The approach also aligns with broader principles of sustainable urban planning by optimising existing infrastructure corridors instead of consuming additional land. However, specialists emphasise that such projects must adhere to stringent engineering, structural and fire safety standards to ensure compatibility with both transport infrastructure and electricity distribution systems. Hyderabad’s growing digital economy, expanding residential neighbourhoods and rising adoption of electric mobility are expected to place additional pressure on the city’s power network over the coming years. Strengthening distribution infrastructure closer to demand centres will be critical for maintaining reliable electricity supply and reducing transmission losses.

If implemented, the compact substation model could provide a scalable solution for future infrastructure planning in land-constrained urban environments. Urban planners believe integrating power infrastructure with transport assets demonstrates how cities can maximise limited public space while supporting long-term economic growth, service reliability and climate-resilient urban development.
