Hyderabad To Test 4.32 Lakh Water Samples Across City

Hyderabad is set to undertake one of its largest drinking water quality monitoring programmes as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) prepares to test nearly 4.32 lakh water samples across the metropolitan region over the next year. The initiative aims to strengthen public health safeguards and improve access to safe drinking water, particularly in densely populated and vulnerable urban communities.

The year-long programme will cover the CURE region, including Greater Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri municipal areas. Special attention will be given to service reservoirs, low-income neighbourhoods and urban slums where ageing infrastructure, leakages and sanitation challenges can increase the risk of water contamination. Under the monitoring programme, authorities will conduct residual chlorine testing, bacteriological analysis, physicochemical assessments and sanitary inspections of water storage infrastructure. The initiative will also include public awareness campaigns and community outreach activities to promote safe water practices.

Officials plan to implement the programme through a third-party monitoring framework involving trained sample collectors, qualified analysts and NABL-accredited laboratories. The independent testing mechanism is expected to improve transparency while ensuring compliance with prescribed drinking water quality standards. A major component of the initiative involves residual chlorine testing using the DPO method. Around 36,000 samples will be tested every month to identify locations where chlorination levels fall below recommended limits. Authorities believe the large-scale testing effort will help detect potential vulnerabilities early and support timely corrective action.

Urban health experts note that regular water quality monitoring is becoming increasingly important as cities expand and water distribution networks grow more complex. Proactive testing can help reduce public health risks, strengthen consumer confidence and improve the reliability of urban water supply systems. The initiative also reflects a broader focus on preventive infrastructure management. By combining scientific analysis, field inspections and community engagement, Hyderabad aims to strengthen water safety standards and support long-term urban resilience. As Hyderabad continues to expand, ensuring consistent access to safe drinking water remains a critical component of sustainable urban development.
