Hyderabad Telangana Godavari Plan Advances Regional Water Management
Hyderabad: Telangana is accelerating efforts to integrate major lift irrigation systems across the Godavari basin to improve water distribution efficiency, strengthen long-term water security and enhance resilience against changing rainfall patterns. The strategy combines ongoing infrastructure projects with reservoir connectivity and canal networks, reflecting a broader shift towards coordinated river basin management as demand for water continues to grow across agriculture, industry and expanding urban centres.
During a review of key irrigation works in the Khammam region, senior members of the state government assessed progress on the Godavari water utilisation strategy, which aims to connect multiple irrigation systems to optimise the movement and storage of river water. Officials indicated that linking major projects would improve operational flexibility while reducing dependence on isolated water infrastructure. Among the initiatives under implementation are new canal connections and tunnel works designed to transfer water between reservoirs and irrigation networks. Authorities said recently completed links have already improved connectivity within the regional water system, while additional investments are being directed towards land acquisition and construction to accelerate pending components of ongoing projects. The state also confirmed that restoration work is continuing on key barrages associated with the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme. Engineers are carrying out structural assessments, technical investigations and safety evaluations in line with recommendations issued by national regulatory agencies. Officials maintain that these structures will resume operations only after receiving the required engineering certifications, underscoring a greater emphasis on infrastructure safety and operational reliability.
The Godavari water utilisation programme has gained increasing importance as Telangana faces greater climate variability and pressure on water resources. Water experts note that integrated river basin planning enables governments to redirect supplies between reservoirs, improve drought preparedness and support both agricultural production and drinking water requirements during periods of uneven rainfall. Infrastructure specialists also point out that interconnected irrigation systems can contribute to more efficient use of available resources by reducing transmission losses and improving storage management. However, they stress that long-term sustainability will depend on balancing irrigation expansion with ecological protection, groundwater recharge and responsible reservoir operations.
