HYDERABAD: Telangana has commenced continuous pumping of Godavari water through the Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme as part of a drought mitigation strategy aimed at supporting kharif cultivation across the erstwhile Warangal region. The month-long operation is expected to improve irrigation coverage, replenish key reservoirs and strengthen water availability for agriculture amid an uneven monsoon season.
The Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme has been activated to deliver water to multiple reservoirs before canal releases begin later this month, enabling farmers to commence cultivation without prolonged delays. The initiative comes at a time when deficient rainfall has slowed agricultural activity in several parts of Telangana and heightened concerns over water availability for both irrigation and drinking purposes. According to public representatives overseeing the programme, nearly three lakh acres are expected to benefit from the current pumping exercise. Water is planned to be routed to major reservoirs serving the region before being released through canal networks, creating a more reliable irrigation supply during the crucial early stages of the kharif season. The project also reflects Telangana’s continued reliance on large-scale lift irrigation systems to move river water to drought-prone regions located away from natural river flows. Such infrastructure has become increasingly important in supporting agricultural production, stabilising rural livelihoods and reducing dependence on uncertain monsoon rainfall.
Officials indicated that the Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme has evolved beyond its original irrigation objective and now contributes to regional drinking water security as well. Over the years, the project has expanded its role by supporting both agricultural needs and domestic water supply across several parts of the state. Agricultural experts note that timely reservoir filling can improve cropping confidence during weak monsoon years by ensuring water availability during the initial cultivation period. However, they also emphasise that efficient water management remains critical, particularly for water-intensive crops, as climate variability continues to place pressure on river systems and reservoir storage. Farmers have been encouraged to adopt more efficient irrigation practices to maximise the benefits of available water. Water resource specialists advocate controlled irrigation schedules, improved field-level water management and conservation techniques that allow limited supplies to reach larger command areas without unnecessary losses.
The initiative also highlights the broader challenge of balancing irrigation demand with long-term water sustainability. Climate experts argue that while lift irrigation projects provide essential drought resilience, their effectiveness can be enhanced through complementary measures such as watershed restoration, groundwater recharge, micro-irrigation and improved reservoir management. As Telangana navigates another uncertain monsoon season, the success of the month-long pumping programme will depend on coordinated reservoir operations, efficient canal distribution and responsible water use at the farm level.
