Residents of Shanthi Nagar in Hayathnagar are facing a worsening civic crisis as recurring sewage overflows, stagnant wastewater, garbage accumulation and a road cave-in disrupt daily movement. The problems have persisted for months, with the damaged road exposing a drain and creating additional risks for pedestrians, two-wheelers and other local traffic.
The Shanthi Nagar civic crisis points to a deeper infrastructure problem rather than a single drainage failure. Residents have reported wastewater spreading across internal roads, particularly after sewage overflows. During rainfall, stagnant water and blocked stretches further restrict access to homes and increase the pressure on already inadequate drainage infrastructure. The road collapse has added a more immediate safety concern. Although the affected section has been barricaded, residents say temporary protection may not be enough, particularly after dark. Children, older people and two-wheeler users are among those exposed to the danger posed by the open section. Waste management has compounded the situation. Construction debris and accumulated garbage along the roadside have narrowed usable road space and contributed to an unhygienic environment. Stagnant wastewater combined with waste can also create conditions favourable to mosquitoes and other pests, making regular cleaning and drainage maintenance important from a public-health perspective.
The underlying problem appears to be linked to ageing sewer infrastructure. A senior water board official said the affected stretch contains an older sewer line that has suffered repeated damage. Repairs have reportedly been followed by failures at other points, suggesting that repeated spot repairs may not provide a durable solution. A proposal estimated at around ₹39 crore is being prepared for more extensive sewer rehabilitation. The proposed work would involve relaying the affected sewer network between Shanthi Nagar and the Government Degree College area. Until a larger intervention begins, repair work is expected to continue to manage recurring failures. Recent procurement records also indicate work related to a collapsed 900-mm-diameter sewerage trunk line at Shanthi Nagar Junction in Hayathnagar, under the LB Nagar zone. Separate work has also been proposed to divert sewer flows from the same trunk line, indicating that the area requires network-level intervention rather than isolated surface repairs. For the Shanthi Nagar civic crisis, the immediate priority is to secure the collapsed section, restore drainage flows and remove accumulated waste. However, the longer-term challenge is ensuring that sewerage and road infrastructure are upgraded together. Fixing the surface without addressing the ageing network below it could leave residents vulnerable to repeated failures.
For a rapidly expanding Hyderabad, such neighbourhood-level infrastructure gaps carry wider implications. Reliable drainage, safe roads and resilient utility networks are basic requirements for equitable urban growth. The next phase of work will need to focus not only on repairing visible damage but also on strengthening the underlying infrastructure to prevent the same cycle from returning.
