Hyderabad Railway Water Safety Faces Fresh Scrutiny

Indian Railways is set to undertake a nationwide review of drinking-water infrastructure after an audit identified faecal contamination indicators in water coolers at eight stations, including Hyderabad and several stations in Maharashtra. The findings have pushed passenger health and basic station amenities back into focus, with the railway network now planning filtration, testing and monitoring measures across about 20,000 points.

The railway water safety concerns emerged from an audit covering 512 non-suburban stations. Samples from water coolers at Hyderabad, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Kalyan, Lonavala, Bhiwandi Road, Coimbatore, Palakkad Junction and Madhupur reportedly showed the presence of E. coli. The bacterium is widely used as an indicator of faecal contamination and can signal problems within a water supply or storage system. The findings are significant because drinking water is a basic passenger service, particularly across a network that serves millions of travellers. The audit also identified broader gaps in essential amenities, indicating that water quality cannot be treated separately from station maintenance, sanitation and utility management. According to the audit findings cited in the report, 458 of the 512 stations assessed did not meet prescribed standards for Minimum Essential Amenities. Shortages included drinking-water taps, toilets and urinals. The scale of these gaps raises questions about whether existing infrastructure is keeping pace with passenger demand and whether maintenance systems are sufficiently responsive.

The issue is particularly relevant for large urban stations, where passenger volumes are high and infrastructure operates under sustained pressure. A contaminated cooler or poorly maintained storage tank can affect large numbers of people if testing and corrective action are delayed. In response, the Railways has ordered a broader railway water safety overhaul. The proposed system is expected to cover around 20,000 locations, including water coolers, with greater emphasis on filtration from storage tanks through to passenger outlets. Measures are also expected to include periodic water testing, tank cleaning, replacement of defective storage infrastructure and centralised monitoring. The approach is important because filtration alone cannot resolve failures caused by poorly maintained tanks, pipelines or dispensing points. Regular testing at both source and outlet will be necessary to establish whether treated water remains safe when it reaches passengers.

The findings also underline a wider urban infrastructure challenge. Railway stations function as public spaces where sanitation, water, waste management and accessibility directly influence the experience of commuters and long-distance travellers. Upgrading these systems can improve public health while reducing the need for repeated emergency repairs. The next test will be implementation. Transparent reporting of water-quality results, scheduled maintenance and clear accountability at station level will determine whether the proposed overhaul produces lasting improvements. For a rapidly expanding passenger network, safe drinking water must remain a core infrastructure standard rather than a periodic compliance exercise.
