Hyderabad Road Expansion Plan Targets Nine Corridors

Hyderabad: Authorities have proposed widening nine high-traffic road corridors across Hyderabad in an effort to improve mobility, reduce travel delays and strengthen connectivity between key residential, commercial and employment centres. The initiative reflects the city’s growing need for transport infrastructure that can keep pace with rapid urban expansion and increasing vehicle movement.

The proposed works cover several strategic corridors across the metropolitan area, including the stretch beneath the PV Narasimha Rao (PVNR) Expressway, the Hitec City–Madhapur corridor and roads linking major junctions in central and northern Hyderabad. If implemented, the upgrades are expected to address long-standing traffic bottlenecks on routes that experience heavy commuter and commercial traffic throughout the day. Under the proposal, the service road beneath the PVNR Expressway between Pillar No. 117 and Aramghar Crossroads would be expanded from 45 metres to 60 metres. Other planned improvements include widening the Hitec City Junction–Madhapur Road to 36 metres and increasing the width of the GVK Mall Junction–KBR Park Road to 24 metres. The Hyderabad road widening proposal also extends to Neredmet Crossroads, Sundarayya Park Road, Vijaynagar Colony Road, the Jeedimetla Pipeline Road connecting to Narsapur Road, the NH44–Alwal Circle corridor, Nallakunta Vegetable Market Road and the road near Himayatnagar Circle. These corridors connect important residential neighbourhoods, business districts and transport links that collectively support a significant share of the city’s daily traffic.

Urban mobility experts note that increasing road capacity can improve traffic circulation in the short term, particularly at busy intersections where congestion regularly disrupts commuting and freight movement. However, they emphasise that road expansion should be integrated with stronger public transport networks, safe pedestrian facilities and efficient junction management to ensure long-term benefits. From an economic perspective, improved road connectivity can reduce travel time for workers and logistics operators while enhancing access to commercial hubs, industrial areas and technology clusters. Better connectivity may also strengthen investment prospects in surrounding neighbourhoods by improving accessibility for businesses and residents. The Hyderabad road widening initiative also highlights the importance of balancing infrastructure growth with sustainable urban planning. Specialists suggest that future implementation should include attention to drainage systems, roadside landscaping, pedestrian safety and universal accessibility to ensure that expanding road infrastructure supports both mobility and environmental resilience.

While the proposed corridors have been identified for widening, authorities have not yet announced a construction schedule or implementation timeline. As Hyderabad continues to expand, the effectiveness of these projects will depend on coordinated planning that improves mobility while creating safer, more efficient and people-focused urban spaces.
