Hyderabad’s long-term transport expansion plans have received a significant boost after the Telangana government secured final forest clearance for the proposed Raviryal-Amangal radial road project. The approval removes a major regulatory hurdle and allows construction to move forward on one of the region’s most important future connectivity corridors.
The 41.5-kilometre greenfield road will connect the Outer Ring Road (ORR) at Raviryal with the proposed Regional Ring Road (RRR) near Amangal, creating a strategic transport link across southern Hyderabad. The project is expected to improve regional accessibility while supporting future urban and economic growth beyond the existing metropolitan core. Authorities received Stage-II forest clearance for the diversion of approximately 87.66 hectares of forest land, a reduction from the originally proposed requirement of 95.86 hectares. The approval enables Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL) to proceed with implementation while adhering to environmental and conservation conditions prescribed by state and central authorities.
Planned as a six-lane partially access-controlled expressway with future expansion potential to eight lanes, the corridor has been designed as a multi-functional transport infrastructure project. In addition to road connectivity, provisions have been incorporated for future metro or rail transit systems, cycling infrastructure, pedestrian facilities, utility corridors and green buffer zones. Urban planners view the project as an important component of Hyderabad’s long-term growth strategy. By strengthening links between the ORR and the upcoming RRR, the corridor is expected to facilitate more balanced urban expansion, improve logistics efficiency and unlock development opportunities in emerging southern growth areas. Transport experts note that radial roads play a critical role in metropolitan planning by connecting peripheral ring roads with urban centres. Such corridors help distribute traffic more efficiently, reduce congestion on existing routes and support the development of new residential, commercial and industrial districts.
The ₹4,030 crore project will be implemented in phases and is expected to enhance regional mobility while supporting future multimodal transportation initiatives. The inclusion of provisions for public transport infrastructure reflects growing emphasis on integrated mobility planning in rapidly expanding urban regions. As part of the environmental clearance conditions, authorities will undertake compensatory afforestation across more than 97 hectares in Adilabad district. The project must also comply with strict forest conservation regulations, with any future alignment changes requiring approval from the Union government. With Hyderabad continuing to expand beyond traditional urban boundaries, infrastructure projects such as the Raviryal-Amangal radial road are increasingly viewed as essential for supporting sustainable growth, improving connectivity and strengthening the region’s long-term economic competitiveness.
