Hyderabad Public Transport Push Targets Traffic Relief
Hyderabad: The Telangana government is preparing a series of short-term and long-term interventions aimed at easing traffic congestion in Hyderabad, with officials placing greater emphasis on strengthening public transport, improving pedestrian infrastructure and creating a more integrated urban mobility network. The proposed measures reflect a broader shift towards sustainable transport planning as the city grapples with rapid urban expansion and rising vehicle ownership.
Senior government officials said multiple mobility initiatives are being evaluated for implementation over the coming months, including engineering improvements along traffic-prone corridors, enhanced pedestrian facilities and better coordination between different modes of public transport. The strategy seeks to reduce dependence on private vehicles while making commuting safer and more efficient. Authorities have identified several road stretches where engineering deficiencies contribute to recurring congestion. Planned interventions include redesigning problematic junctions and upgrading transport infrastructure. Alongside these improvements, elevated road projects already under construction are expected to support traffic movement on key routes, although planners acknowledge that road expansion alone cannot provide a lasting solution. The government’s mobility agenda also includes developing model pedestrian corridors with wider footpaths and improved facilities for non-motorised transport. These projects are intended to create safer and more accessible streets for walkers and cyclists while aligning with judicial recognition of safe pedestrian access as a public right.
Another significant proposal involves strengthening institutional coordination through an integrated metropolitan transport framework. Officials are exploring measures such as a unified ticketing system across different public transport services and digital platforms that provide commuters with real-time traffic information and travel updates. Urban mobility specialists argue that sustainable transport policies should focus on influencing travel behaviour rather than continuously increasing road capacity. International experience suggests that cities achieving long-term congestion reduction have invested heavily in reliable, affordable public transport while implementing policies that discourage excessive dependence on private vehicles. Experts also caution that infrastructure projects designed primarily for faster vehicle movement can unintentionally reduce accessibility for pedestrians, particularly older residents, children and persons with disabilities. They emphasise that transport planning should balance mobility with inclusivity, ensuring that road upgrades do not create additional barriers for vulnerable groups.
Policy analysts further stress that community participation remains essential for effective urban planning. Involving residents from diverse social and economic backgrounds can help authorities better understand mobility challenges and design infrastructure that serves a wider cross-section of the population. As Hyderabad continues to expand into new residential and commercial corridors, transport experts believe the city’s long-term competitiveness will depend on developing an integrated mobility system that combines efficient public transport, safe walking infrastructure and technology-driven traffic management. The success of these proposed interventions will ultimately be measured by their ability to improve daily commuting while supporting climate resilience, economic productivity and a more liveable urban environment.
