Hyderabad: Telangana is preparing to strengthen Hyderabad’s public transport network through an integrated electric mobility initiative designed to improve first and last-mile connectivity. The proposed system, centred on electric autorickshaws and unified ticketing, aims to make bus travel more convenient while encouraging commuters to shift away from private vehicles, a move that could reduce congestion and support the city’s long-term sustainability goals.

Transport authorities are evaluating a pilot programme that would introduce electric autorickshaws connecting residential neighbourhoods with major bus terminals. The service is expected to debut in Hyderabad before being expanded to other urban centres across the state, subject to operational readiness and stakeholder partnerships. Officials are also working on a unified ticketing framework that would allow passengers to complete multi-stage journeys using a single digital transaction. Instead of purchasing separate tickets for feeder services and buses, commuters could plan and pay for an end-to-end journey through one platform, improving travel convenience and reducing transfer delays. The proposal follows growing recognition that inadequate last mile connectivity remains one of the biggest barriers to higher public transport usage in Hyderabad. Many residential layouts lie beyond comfortable walking distance from bus stops, metro stations and suburban rail services. As a result, commuters often depend on private vehicles or informal transport options, adding pressure to already congested roads.

Urban mobility experts believe that reliable feeder services are critical to improving public transport efficiency. International experience shows that integrated transport systems perform best when buses, metro rail, shared mobility and non-motorised transport function as interconnected networks rather than isolated services. The adoption of electric vehicles within feeder services also aligns with broader efforts to reduce urban emissions and improve air quality. Replacing conventional fuel-powered autorickshaws with electric alternatives can lower operating costs over time while supporting cleaner urban mobility. The proposed service is expected to follow a hub-and-spoke model, connecting neighbourhoods with major transport hubs. Such networks are widely used in cities seeking to improve accessibility without significantly increasing the number of large public transport vehicles operating on local streets.

Transport planners note that seamless ticketing and integrated mobility platforms can also generate better travel data, helping authorities optimise routes, monitor passenger demand and improve service planning. These digital tools are increasingly becoming essential components of modern urban transport systems. If implemented effectively, the initiative could strengthen Hyderabad’s transition towards an integrated, commuter-focused mobility network. Combined with investments in buses, metro services and pedestrian infrastructure, improved last mile connectivity has the potential to reduce dependence on private vehicles, support inclusive access to public transport and contribute to a more climate-resilient urban future.
