Hyderabad Police Redraws 76 Jurisdictions After GHMC Restructuring

The Telangana government has redrawn 76 police station, division and zone boundaries across the Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri commissionerates following the restructuring of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), changing the jurisdictional map for law and order, traffic, women’s safety and cybercrime services.

The government order aligns police jurisdictions with the revised administrative boundaries. It covers police stations, divisions, zones, traffic units, women police stations and zonal cyber cells, with the stated objective of improving supervision, response time and law-and-order management.

The changes mean that several localities previously handled by one police station, zone or commissionerate will now come under another administrative unit. Portions of the Market police station limits, earlier under the Hyderabad commissionerate, have been shifted to the Malkajgiri commissionerate, while the Begumpet ward portion will remain with the Hyderabad commissionerate. The notification also records changes involving Shamshabad, Narsingi, Hayathnagar, Abdullapurmet and other police stations.

Malkajgiri commissionerate will receive a new Uppal law-and-order zone, along with Uppal, Medipally and Alwal divisions. A new Uppal traffic division has also been created. At the same time, the existing Begumpet law-and-order zone has been abolished under the revised structure.

Cyberabad commissionerate has also seen several colonies and villages moved between existing police stations, divisions and zones. The order separately revises traffic-policing arrangements, assigning several traffic police stations and divisions to new divisions under the reworked boundaries.

The women’s safety wing and zonal cyber cells have been mapped to the new structure. Women police station arrangements now place the West Zone unit under the Jubilee Hills zone, the East Zone unit under Secunderabad, the Central Zone unit under Khairatabad, the South Zone unit under Charminar, the South-West Zone unit under Golconda and the South-East Zone unit under Rajendranagar. The corresponding zonal cyber cells have been assigned to the same zones.

The reorganisation also changes the name of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport police station to Shamshabad police station. It will continue to operate under the Shamshabad jurisdiction, while the traffic police station arrangement under the Shamshabad division has also been revised.

The order has implications for how residents identify the police station or senior officer responsible for complaints, traffic enforcement, women’s safety assistance and cybercrime coordination. Jurisdictional changes can also affect the administrative routing of complaints and the supervision of police stations serving fast-growing urban and peri-urban areas.

The Jubilee Hills zone has been reworked to include the Banjara Hills and Madhuranagar police stations. The earlier Banjara Hills zone has been removed. According to the report, ACP Venkat Reddy, who was made in-charge ACP of the Jubilee Hills zone while ACP P. Venkatagiri was associated with the Special Investigation Team probe into the phone-tapping case, is expected to continue in that role. The government order’s revised jurisdictional structure will now govern the affected police, traffic, women-safety and cybercrime units.
