Hyderabad Old City Gets Telangana’s ₹25-Crore Development Push

The Telangana government has announced a series of measures for Hyderabad’s Old City, including the release of ₹25 crore by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) towards completing a multi-storeyed building near Haj House in Nampally. Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka said the building would support minority education and welfare facilities.

The announcement followed a high-level review meeting on minority welfare chaired by Vikramarka at Praja Bhavan on Friday. The meeting discussed infrastructure, education funding and administrative delays affecting minority communities across Telangana, with particular attention to the Old City.

Vikramarka directed the GHMC to release ₹25 crore from the amount due to the Wakf Board for wakf land used in road-widening projects. The funds have been earmarked for completing the partially constructed building adjacent to Haj House, where construction had remained pending for several years.

Once completed, the building can accommodate a Study Circle for minority students and offices of the Minority Welfare Department, according to the Deputy Chief Minister. The project links compensation or payment obligations arising from civic infrastructure work with the completion of a public welfare facility in a densely populated part of Hyderabad.

The Deputy Chief Minister also instructed officials to remove obstacles delaying the establishment of two Study Circles, one each in Moghalpura and Bandlaguda. AIMIM floor leader in the Legislative Assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi offered ready-to-use space at the two locations and was asked to formally submit the proposal to the government.

Vikramarka said there would be no delays in releasing funds for schools, Study Circles and other educational institutions serving minority students. He also directed officials to ensure that bills for buildings for educational institutions were cleared without delay.

The review additionally covered the government’s Overseas Scholarship programme. Vikramarka said Telangana would take the necessary steps to add Egypt and Saudi Arabia to the list of countries where eligible minority students can pursue higher studies with financial assistance under the scheme.

The government also discussed issues related to Shaadi Mubaarak, alternate land for an Islamic Cultural Centre, applications from minority beneficiaries under the Rajiv Yuva Vikasam scheme and pre-Matric Scholarships. The Deputy Chief Minister said these matters would be examined and that the required funds would be released in a timely manner.

The meeting was attended by Minorities Welfare Minister Md. Azharuddin, Akbaruddin Owaisi, principal secretary of minorities welfare Ahmad Nadeem, secretary B. Shafiullah, GHMC commissioner R.V. Karnan and other officials. It followed an assurance made in the Legislative Assembly by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Vikramarka that the government would hold a meeting to address concerns raised by minority communities.

The immediate implementation steps are the formal submission of space proposals for the two Study Circles, the issuance of directions to clear administrative hurdles and the release of the GHMC funds for the Haj House building. The government has not provided a completion date for the building or specified the timeline for the proposed Study Circles.
