Hyderabad Musi Project Faces Environmental Clearance Questions
Hyderabad’s proposed Musi Riverfront Development Project is facing renewed scrutiny from environmental groups and civil society organisations over the basis of its environmental clearance. The concerns centre on ecological impact, flood resilience, project boundaries, potential displacement and the transparency of the assessment process, putting greater focus on how the city balances river restoration with large-scale urban development.
The concerns were raised during a meeting convened by Musi Jan Andolan with civil society groups in Hyderabad. The participants said their objections were not directed at the broader goal of improving the Musi River. Instead, they questioned whether the proposed approach adequately accounts for the river’s ecological functions and its role in managing stormwater and floods. The groups have sought greater clarity on how environmental and flood-related risks were assessed before the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority granted clearance. They also questioned whether the project’s stated footprint and displacement figures are consistent across the documents submitted for approval. The debate comes as Hyderabad considers a major transformation of the Musi corridor. The government has positioned river rejuvenation as part of a broader effort to address pollution, improve public spaces and upgrade infrastructure along the river. Yet the scale of intervention makes environmental safeguards particularly important.
Urban water experts generally distinguish between restoring a river system and primarily reshaping its physical surroundings. A river is part of a wider drainage network, and its floodplain can provide space for excess water during extreme rainfall. Changes to banks, channels or surrounding land therefore need to account for hydrology rather than focusing only on visible improvements.
