The Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit in Telangana is entering its final phase of development, marking a major step toward strengthening India’s short-distance passenger rail network. Once operational, the facility is expected to deliver 200 new inter-city trainsets within five years — a scale of rollout that could reshape how students, workers, and small businesses move across regions. The project signals a shift toward cleaner, more reliable mass transit at a time when Indian cities are struggling with road congestion and rising emissions.
Located at a strategic junction that links South and Central India, the Kazipet unit is being positioned as a backbone for a new category of high-frequency, medium-range trains. Senior officials involved in the project say the upcoming fleet is tailored for the everyday commuter, with routes planned around 200–300 km — distances currently dominated by polluting buses and private vehicles. The move reflects a broader push within the rail system to prioritise frequent, affordable, and climate-aligned mobility over long-haul, premium services. The new trains will feature modern safety and ventilation systems, automatic doors, and updated coach layouts designed for quick boarding and de-boarding — an essential requirement for routes with multiple stops. Each trainset will comprise 20 coaches, each fitted with two toilets and improved interior specifications to suit high turnover passenger traffic. Engineers familiar with the design say that the units are being optimised for robust daily use rather than luxury, keeping citizen mobility at the core.
One of the most consequential elements of the project is the inclusion of regenerative braking systems — technology that converts a portion of braking energy back into usable electricity. Urban mobility experts note that such systems not only reduce operational emissions but also lower energy demand, making the trains more economical for the public system to run. This is particularly important as India’s cities look for ways to decarbonise transport without escalating fares. The trains will be capable of speeds up to 130 kmph, offering a substantial time advantage over road-based transport while remaining accessible to low- and middle-income passengers.
