Hyderabad Mahabubnagar Seeks Railway Underpass For Safer Access
Hyderabad: A fresh demand has been raised for improved railway infrastructure in Mahabubnagar, with calls for the construction of a Railway Under Bridge (RUB) at New Moti Nagar to improve public safety and connectivity. The proposal highlights long-standing mobility challenges faced by residents who regularly cross active railway tracks to access nearby neighbourhoods and essential public services.
The request, submitted to senior South Central Railway (SCR) officials, argues that the absence of a safe crossing has created risks for thousands of residents living in New Moti Nagar. According to local representatives, people travelling to Saddulagundu, Rajendranagar and Premnagar are often compelled to cross railway tracks, increasing the likelihood of accidents and disrupting emergency response during medical situations. The proposed Mahabubnagar railway underpass is intended to provide a safer and uninterrupted route for pedestrians, two-wheelers and emergency vehicles while reducing dependence on unsafe track crossings. Urban transport experts note that grade-separated crossings such as railway underpasses play an important role in improving public safety and enhancing connectivity in rapidly growing urban settlements. In addition to the underpass, local authorities have sought railway approval for a permanent road connecting New Moti Nagar with the nearby Food Corporation of India (FCI) warehouse. Improved road infrastructure is expected to strengthen local mobility, reduce travel time and provide better access for residents and service vehicles.
Another concern highlighted during the representation relates to stagnant drainage water near the existing railway bridge. Civic experts say poor drainage around transport infrastructure can damage roads, affect public health and reduce the resilience of urban infrastructure during heavy rainfall. They recommend integrated drainage planning alongside transport projects to improve long-term infrastructure performance. The Mahabubnagar railway underpass proposal also reflects broader challenges faced by expanding towns where residential growth has outpaced transport infrastructure.
