Hyderabad Jurala Sees Falling Inflows As Gates Remain Shut
The Jurala reservoir in Telangana is shifting into a more cautious water-management phase after flood inflows from upstream reservoirs declined. Authorities have shut the project gates and stopped additional irrigation releases, prioritising available water for future drinking and irrigation needs as the Krishna basin sees weaker inflows.
Jurala was receiving around 80,000 cusecs of water, while approximately 39,608 cusecs was being released downstream. All six power-generation units continued operating, allowing the project to generate electricity while managing downstream flows. The decline follows weaker rainfall conditions in parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, along with reduced releases from the Almatti and Narayanpur reservoirs. Since Jurala depends heavily on upstream flows, changes in these reservoirs can quickly affect its operating position. The project’s water level was reported at 317.51 metres, below its full reservoir level of 318.51 metres. Its total storage capacity is around 9.65 TMC, with approximately 7.66 TMC currently available. The decision to hold back irrigation releases has direct implications for agriculture. Jurala’s left and right canal systems serve nearly 1.03 lakh acres, making the reservoir an important source of irrigation water for surrounding farming areas.
However, releasing additional water now could reduce the buffer available for the coming season. Officials have therefore opted to conserve supplies rather than increase irrigation releases while inflows remain uncertain. The decision also highlights the competing demands placed on regional reservoirs. Water must be managed across agriculture, drinking-water requirements, electricity generation and downstream ecological needs. When inflows weaken, these priorities become more difficult to balance. The reduction in Jurala releases is also expected to affect the Srisailam reservoir, which receives water downstream through the Krishna system. Any sustained decline could reduce the pace at which Srisailam gains storage during the current season.
For farmers, the uncertainty is particularly important. A strong flood pulse can improve reservoir storage quickly, but short-lived inflows do not necessarily guarantee sufficient water through the entire agricultural season. Longer-term planning therefore depends on both reservoir levels and rainfall patterns. The situation also reinforces the need for basin-level coordination. Jurala, Almatti, Narayanpur and Srisailam operate within an interconnected river system. Decisions at one reservoir can influence water availability and power generation at several downstream projects. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring rainfall, upstream releases and reservoir inflows before deciding whether irrigation releases can resume. For now, conserving available water provides a buffer against a potentially weaker inflow season.
