Hyderabad Indiramma Housing Targets Affordable Urban Living
Hyderabad: Telangana has extended its Indiramma housing programme to Hyderabad’s Core Urban Region (CURE), introducing a new affordable housing initiative aimed at expanding home ownership for eligible urban residents. The scheme seeks to address housing demand in the metropolitan region through multi-storey residential developments while combining government financial support with beneficiary contributions to improve access to formal housing.
The programme will offer apartments with a carpet area of 400 square feet in high-rise buildings across identified locations within Hyderabad’s urban region. Under the proposed financial structure, the state government will provide a subsidy of ₹5 lakh for each dwelling, while beneficiaries will contribute the remaining cost, estimated at approximately ₹6 lakh, subject to final project pricing. The Hyderabad Indiramma Housing Scheme is targeted at residents who meet specific eligibility conditions, including long-term residence within the Core Urban Region and the absence of ownership of residential property within the notified urban limits. Applicants who have previously benefited from similar government housing programmes will not be eligible, reflecting an effort to prioritise households without access to formal housing. Authorities have introduced multiple application channels, allowing eligible residents to apply through digital platforms, MeeSeva centres and designated online services. Applicants are required to pay a nominal application fee along with an earnest money deposit. Following submission, officials will undertake document scrutiny and a comprehensive verification process to assess eligibility, household details and potential duplication before finalising the list of beneficiaries.
Where applications exceed the number of available housing units, beneficiaries will be selected through a lottery system after verification. Subsequent stages will include field inspections, phased financial contributions and formal registration before homes are handed over to successful applicants. Urban development experts say the initiative reflects a broader shift towards vertical affordable housing in rapidly expanding metropolitan areas where land availability is increasingly constrained. Multi-storey residential developments can accommodate larger populations within existing urban boundaries while reducing pressure for peripheral expansion. However, planners stress that affordable housing programmes should be integrated with reliable public transport, water supply, sanitation, healthcare and educational infrastructure to create sustainable and liveable communities. Housing economists also note that transparent beneficiary selection and digital application systems can strengthen public confidence by improving accountability and reducing administrative delays. At the same time, affordability will depend not only on initial subsidies but also on long-term maintenance costs, access to employment and connectivity to essential services.
