Residents say several neighbourhoods in Anandbagh have experienced a steady decline in groundwater availability, leaving many borewells either unproductive or unable to meet daily household requirements. With rainfall remaining below expectations in recent weeks, dependence on groundwater has increased, exposing the area’s vulnerability to seasonal water stress. The local residents’ association has approached the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), requesting a dedicated awareness campaign to encourage households to install rainwater harvesting systems. The group believes that wider adoption of recharge pits could help replenish depleted aquifers while reducing dependence on groundwater extraction during dry periods. Urban water experts note that Hyderabad’s expanding residential footprint, combined with increasing paved surfaces and shrinking natural recharge zones, has significantly reduced the amount of rainwater that percolates into underground aquifers. As urbanisation accelerates, groundwater replenishment has become increasingly dependent on well-designed rainwater harvesting systems and integrated stormwater management. Environmental planners also point out that recurring groundwater shortages can place additional pressure on municipal water supply networks, particularly during prolonged dry spells. Expanding recharge infrastructure, protecting lakes and open spaces, and promoting water-efficient urban design are considered essential for improving long-term water resilience. Hyderabad has introduced rainwater harvesting regulations in previous years, but experts argue that broader community participation, regular maintenance of recharge structures and stronger public awareness are necessary to maximise their effectiveness. Local campaigns, particularly in water-stressed neighbourhoods, can play an important role in encouraging widespread adoption.

As climate variability and urban growth continue to reshape Hyderabad’s water landscape, strengthening groundwater recharge will remain a critical component of sustainable city planning.
