Hyderabad’s eastern growth corridor is set for another phase of transport infrastructure expansion after the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation approved proposals for two major flyover projects valued at around Rs 685 crore. The planned investments seek to ease persistent traffic bottlenecks across rapidly urbanising neighbourhoods while supporting future mobility demands in one of the city’s fastest-growing residential belts.
The proposals, cleared by the municipal standing committee, have been submitted to the state government for administrative approval and financial sanction under the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure (H-CITI) programme. Construction will commence once the required approvals are secured. One proposal involves a four-lane structure spanning approximately 1.4 kilometres at Anand Nagar Junction along the Nagole-Bandlaguda corridor. The second and significantly larger project proposes a six-lane flyover extending roughly 3.2 kilometres across Hastinapuram Junction, BN Reddy Nagar Junction and Sagar Complex Junction on the Nagarjunasagar Highway. Together, the projects form a key part of Hyderabad’s strategy to strengthen connectivity across expanding eastern suburbs. Urban planners note that Hyderabad flyover projects have increasingly become central to addressing mobility challenges created by rapid residential and commercial development. Areas surrounding Nagole, Bandlaguda, Vanasthalipuram and Hayathnagar have witnessed sustained population growth over the past decade, resulting in rising vehicle ownership and greater pressure on existing road infrastructure.
According to officials involved in the planning process, the Anand Nagar flyover is expected to improve traffic movement at one of the city’s busiest intersections while strengthening links with the Inner Ring Road and the nearby Metro terminal. By separating through traffic from local movements, the project aims to reduce travel delays during peak commuting hours and improve journey reliability for daily road users. The larger corridor on the Nagarjunasagar Highway is designed to provide uninterrupted movement across multiple junctions that currently experience heavy congestion. Transport specialists believe reducing signal stoppages along this stretch could shorten travel times for a substantial number of commuters while improving freight movement connecting Hyderabad with neighbouring suburban and peri-urban areas.
However, urban development experts caution that road expansion alone may not provide a lasting solution to congestion unless integrated with sustainable transport planning. They argue that Hyderabad flyover projects should complement investments in public transport, pedestrian infrastructure, cycling facilities and better land-use planning to ensure long-term mobility gains while limiting environmental impacts. As Hyderabad continues to expand beyond its traditional urban core, infrastructure investments are increasingly expected to balance economic growth with resilient and people-centred planning. The proposed flyovers represent another step towards improving regional connectivity, but their long-term success will depend on how effectively they integrate with broader transport networks and future urban development strategies.
