HYDERABAD: Telangana has advanced plans for a new elevated road corridor in central Hyderabad, with a detailed project report now under preparation for a Y-shaped flyover designed to improve traffic movement between Nampally and Lakdikapul. The proposed infrastructure is expected to address one of the city’s most congested urban stretches while highlighting the growing challenge of balancing mobility improvements with sustainable urban planning.
The proposed Hyderabad flyover is planned as a 1.45-kilometre, three-lane, one-way structure that will carry vehicles travelling from Nampally towards Lakdikapul. According to officials involved in the planning process, the alignment has received preliminary government approval and is now entering the technical assessment phase before construction decisions are taken. Central Hyderabad has witnessed increasing traffic pressure over the past decade as commercial activity, institutional zones and administrative offices continue to attract high daily vehicle volumes. The Nampally-Lakdikapul corridor experiences congestion throughout the day, with signalised intersections, mixed traffic movement and periodic traffic diversions adding to travel delays. Restrictions imposed during legislative sessions further affect road users, often creating extended queues across adjoining junctions. The proposed alignment will originate near the educational precinct in Nampally before passing above sections of the Public Gardens area and continuing behind the State Assembly alongside the railway corridor. Near Lakdikapul, the elevated structure is planned to divide into two separate arms, allowing one stream of traffic to merge with the existing flyover network towards Masab Tank while providing additional route flexibility for commuters.
Urban mobility experts note that grade-separated infrastructure can improve travel time on saturated corridors when integrated with wider transport planning. However, they also emphasise that new flyovers should complement investments in public transport, pedestrian infrastructure and non-motorised mobility rather than function as standalone congestion solutions. Without broader traffic demand management, additional road capacity may provide only temporary relief as vehicle ownership continues to rise.
