A four-lane steel road-over-bridge near Hyderabad’s Lingampally railway station is set to connect Gulmohar Junction with BHEL Junction under a Rs 308-crore project designed to ease congestion, bypass a flood-prone underpass and reduce pressure on the existing Nallagandla road-over-bridge.
The project will cover about 2 km and include a two-lane up-ramp from Gulmohar Junction. Railway authorities and Cyberabad Municipal Corporation officials opted for a steel superstructure after a joint inspection, replacing an earlier proposal for a bowstring structure to cross the railway span.
A senior CMC engineering official said the earlier design had taken into account the proposed doubling or tripling of tracks at Lingampally station. The civic body chose steel construction instead of a conventional concrete structure to accelerate construction and minimise disruption to train operations and local traffic.
The revised plan follows a meeting with the Hyderabad Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority. Under the updated blueprint, the Gachibowli-BHEL arm of the Serilingampally road-over-bridge will extend beyond Gulmohar Park Junction. The extension is intended to allow traffic travelling from Gachibowli to BHEL to move directly, reducing the load on the existing Nallagandla RoB.
Cyberabad Traffic officials have also identified a bottleneck near Taranagar on the road connecting the Serilingampally RoB to BHEL. The stretch, currently measuring between 60 and 80 feet in width, is required to be widened to 100 feet under the approved Road Development Plan. The project estimate was modified to extend the two-lane Gachibowli-side up-ramp towards BHEL beyond Gulmohar Junction.
The total cost of Rs 308 crore includes the bridge and junction improvements. The proposed structure will have 41 piers. According to a CMC official, the project is aimed to be completed within 24 hours, although the report does not provide a detailed construction schedule or clarify whether this refers to a specific construction phase or the full project.
The bridge is expected to benefit residents of Tellapur and employees travelling to Gachibowli, HITEC City and the Financial District. Residents currently face delays while crossing the railway track at Lingampally, with the journey taking an additional 15 to 20 minutes during congested periods, according to the report.
The existing road under-bridge is also vulnerable to flooding during heavy monsoon rain. When the underpass fills with water, traffic comes to a halt and commuters can be stranded. The proposed RoB is intended to provide an alternative crossing that remains usable during such inundation and addresses the insufficient width and height of the existing underpass.
The next steps are the commencement of construction and implementation of the revised alignment, including the extended ramp and widening near Taranagar. The supplied report does not specify a formal completion date beyond the CMC official’s reference to a 24-hour target.
