HYDERABAD: Poor road conditions in Bolarum are raising concerns over commuter safety and the resilience of neighbourhood infrastructure, with potholes, waterlogging and slow-moving road projects affecting connectivity around the Secunderabad Cantonment Board area. The situation also illustrates a wider challenge for Hyderabad, where roads crossing multiple administrative jurisdictions can face delays when repairs and upgrades require coordination between different agencies.
The affected stretch between Janapriya Shelters Phase-I and the Monginis bread factory has reportedly developed deep potholes and uneven sections. During rainfall, water collects in damaged portions of the carriageway, making hazards harder to identify for motorists and pedestrians. Underground pipeline leakage has reportedly compounded the problem. Persistent moisture can weaken already damaged road surfaces and accelerate the formation of potholes, creating a cycle in which inadequate drainage and utility problems contribute to repeated road deterioration. Another concern is the slow progress of a second road beneath the railway bridge connecting the Alwal municipal area with the Secunderabad Cantonment region. The proposed connection is intended to improve movement between the two areas, but delays in construction limit the benefits of the wider road network.
The existing road under the railway bridge is also reported to require repairs. For commuters, the combination of a deteriorated existing route and incomplete alternative infrastructure can create longer journeys and concentrate traffic on a limited number of usable roads. The issue has particular relevance during the monsoon. Urban roads are not only transport assets but also part of the city’s surface-water management system. Where road levels, drainage and utility infrastructure are poorly integrated, rainfall can quickly turn minor surface defects into larger mobility and maintenance problems. Urban infrastructure specialists often point to maintenance as one of the most cost-effective ways of preserving public assets. Timely pothole repairs, leakage detection, desilting and proper drainage can prevent relatively small defects from becoming expensive reconstruction requirements.
Bolarum’s situation also highlights the importance of institutional coordination. The affected infrastructure involves the Secunderabad Cantonment Board, Railways and municipal authorities, meaning road repairs, drainage improvements and new construction may depend on decisions across multiple jurisdictions. For residents, the immediate priority is straightforward: make the existing road safe, address the sources of water accumulation and complete delayed works that can provide alternative connectivity. Longer term, infrastructure agencies need clearer coordination mechanisms for projects that cross administrative boundaries. As Hyderabad expands, the durability of its urban transport network will depend not only on large road projects but also on maintaining older neighbourhood connections. In areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall, resilient roads require reliable drainage, properly managed utilities and timely maintenance working as one system.
