Hyderabad Drainage Gaps Raise Rain Resilience Concerns

HYDERABAD: A review of storm-water infrastructure across Cyberabad has identified multiple drainage bottlenecks, undersized pipelines, low road levels and unfinished works that could intensify waterlogging during heavy rain. The findings, discussed at a multi-agency meeting on August 25, highlight the infrastructure pressures emerging across some of Hyderabad’s fastest-growing residential, commercial and technology corridors.

The review covered locations in Gachibowli, Tellapur, Raidurg, Puppalaguda, Kompally, Bachupally, Muthangi and other parts of the western and northern metropolitan region. Agencies were asked to accelerate pending interventions and improve coordination ahead of periods of intense rainfall. At Gachibowli Junction, officials noted that a storm-water pipeline for the ORR free-left had already been sanctioned and tendered, but construction had yet to begin. Other locations, including Aurobindo Colony in JP Nagar, were flagged for incomplete box-drain works. Tellapur also emerged as an area requiring several interventions. At SBI, authorities reviewed a sanctioned pipeline, discontinuities in an existing box drain and pending precast slab work. Such gaps can interrupt the movement of storm water and increase the likelihood of localised flooding when rainfall exceeds drainage capacity.

The review also highlighted problems caused by road levels and inadequate drainage infrastructure. Krinsh Villas was identified as vulnerable because of its low road elevation and insufficient drainage vents. At the Allu Studio U-Turn, officials called for improvements to road levels, pipelines and catch pits, which collect surface runoff before it enters the drainage network. At My Home Mangala, road-level raising work is already under way to improve water movement. Authorities also proposed increasing manhole and pipe capacity at BRC in Puppalaguda to allow faster discharge. Several interventions were identified in areas where rapid construction has increased pressure on existing infrastructure. Proposals include a 300-mm drain towards Chinthal Cheruvu in Gajularamaram, additional storm-water drains near residential developments in Kompally and new road-crossing pipelines along the Miyapur-Bollaram corridor.

In Raidurg and surrounding employment districts, drainage capacity was reviewed at Wipro Junction, Nanakramguda Rotary, Sumadhura Acropolis and other busy locations. Near Raidurgam Metro Station, officials identified the need for larger catch pits and greater pipeline capacity. The environmental dimension is equally important. Storm-water systems are most effective when natural water bodies, drainage channels and their connecting outlets remain unobstructed. At Mallampet Road, authorities discussed creating an appropriate inlet to a box drain leading towards a water body, while Muthangi was flagged for culvert widening and removal of silt and obstructions. For Cyberabad, the findings underline a wider urban planning challenge: drainage capacity needs to grow alongside roads, housing and commercial development. Addressing individual bottlenecks can reduce immediate flood risks, but long-term resilience will depend on designing connected drainage networks that account for rainfall intensity, changing land use and the protection of natural water flows. The next test will be execution. Faster completion of sanctioned works, regular desilting and coordinated planning across civic, development and transport agencies will determine whether identified vulnerabilities are reduced before the next major spell of heavy rain.
