Hyderabad Airfares Surge As Pilgrimage Travel Peaks
Hyderabad: Airfares from Hyderabad to several major pilgrimage destinations have risen sharply with the beginning of the religious month of Shravan, putting pressure on travellers planning temple visits. Booking trends indicate increases of up to two or three times on some routes as seasonal demand coincides with limited seat availability.
Routes connecting Hyderabad with Madurai, Mangaluru, Shirdi, Tirupati, Varanasi and Puri are among those witnessing significant increases. Madurai, which serves travellers heading towards major temple destinations in Tamil Nadu, is seeing one-way fares of around ₹14,000, compared with typical prices of ₹6,000–₹7,000. Mangaluru has also seen fares approach ₹17,000 against normal levels of about ₹7,000–₹8,000. On the Hyderabad-Shirdi route, tickets that generally cost around ₹4,500 have crossed ₹9,500 during the current demand period. The sharp increase is creating difficulties for families who had planned pilgrimage trips well in advance. With train seats also difficult to secure on some routes, travellers are increasingly turning to air travel as an alternative, only to find significantly higher fares.
The impact is particularly noticeable for families travelling in groups. A return flight for two people to some pilgrimage destinations can now cost several times more than expected, making transport one of the largest components of the overall travel budget. Travel industry representatives attribute the spike to a combination of seasonal demand and constrained domestic airline capacity. Changes in airline operations have reduced the number of available seats on some routes, leaving less room to absorb sudden increases in passenger demand. The pressure is not limited to pilgrimage destinations. Airfares from Hyderabad to Chennai and Bengaluru have also increased around the Independence Day weekend. Tickets on some services that normally cost ₹4,000–₹6,000 are now being quoted at ₹10,000–₹20,000. Interestingly, longer-distance routes can sometimes be cheaper than shorter domestic sectors during periods of concentrated demand. Delhi fares, for example, remain comparatively lower on some dates, while Mumbai prices vary depending on availability and departure timings.
The situation highlights the vulnerability of air travellers to seasonal demand spikes. Unlike road or rail travel, airline pricing can change rapidly as available seats decline, making advance planning increasingly important for passengers travelling during major religious and holiday periods. For Hyderabad, the surge also underlines the importance of maintaining adequate connectivity to key religious and tourism destinations. Better capacity planning during predictable seasonal peaks could help reduce extreme fare volatility and give travellers more affordable alternatives. With pilgrimage travel expected to remain strong through the season, passengers may continue to face elevated fares on popular routes. Those with flexible travel dates or access to alternative rail and road connections could find some relief as demand patterns change.
