BHUBANESWAR: Air connectivity from western Odisha to Hyderabad and Bhubaneswar could be restored, with efforts under way to restart flights from Veer Surendra Sai Airport in Jharsuguda. The disruption has left passengers in the region with fewer direct travel options, highlighting the importance of reliable regional aviation for business, employment and access to larger economic centres.
Services on the Jharsuguda–Hyderabad–Bhubaneswar route were suspended from August 17, according to the airport administration. The current suspension is scheduled to continue until October 24, although state-level efforts are reportedly under way to bring the services back earlier. The route is significant because Jharsuguda serves as an aviation gateway for western Odisha, connecting the region with the state capital and major metropolitan markets. A direct air service can substantially reduce travel time compared with longer road or rail journeys, particularly for business travellers, patients, students and families travelling between the two regions. The possible restoration follows discussions between state authorities and the Chief Minister’s Office. Local representatives have indicated that the issue is at an advanced stage, although a confirmed restart date and final operating schedule have yet to be announced.
The interruption also exposes the vulnerability of regional air connectivity when routes depend on a limited number of services. For smaller airports, consistent operations are important not only for passengers but also for attracting investment, supporting tourism and strengthening links between industrial centres and larger cities. Jharsuguda has an important economic role in western Odisha, with industrial activity and mineral-based sectors forming a major part of the regional economy. Reliable transport connections can improve the movement of people and strengthen access to markets and services. However, regional aviation also needs to complement rail and road networks rather than operate as a substitute for broader transport infrastructure. From a sustainability perspective, the return of flights must be considered alongside passenger volumes and the availability of efficient surface transport. Integrated connectivity, including dependable rail and road services, can provide travellers with more choices and reduce pressure on any single transport mode.
For Hyderabad, the route provides another direct connection with western Odisha and could support movement between two economically active regions. For Jharsuguda, restoring the service would improve access to a major technology, business and healthcare hub. The immediate focus remains on securing a confirmed operating schedule. Until that happens, passengers will continue to face uncertainty over travel plans. A durable solution will depend not only on restarting the route but also on maintaining a dependable regional air network that can support long-term economic and social connectivity.
