Mumbai, known for its bustling streets and coastal charm, is now bracing itself for soaring temperatures as the mercury climbed to 35.8 degrees Celsius on Friday, marking a significant increase from the previous day’s recording of 33.5 degrees.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued forecasts indicating a further surge in daytime temperatures in the days ahead, warning residents to prepare for hotter weather conditions. IMD officials have highlighted that this season’s highest recorded daytime temperature stands at 38.8 degrees Celsius, logged on March 21. The recent spike in temperatures has prompted concerns among meteorological experts, emphasising the need for vigilance amidst the impending heatwave. According to IMD’s observations, the Colaba and Santacruz observatories in Mumbai registered maximum temperatures of 32.5 degrees and 35.8 degrees Celsius, respectively, on Friday. These readings were marginally above normal, with deviations of 0.1 degrees and 2.7 degrees, respectively. Meanwhile, minimum temperatures hovered around 24.3 degrees and 23.6 degrees Celsius, remaining relatively stable and in line with seasonal norms.
IMD, in its forecast for Monday, April 8, said light rain is very likely in Thane and Palghar while Mumbai is likely to be dry. Experts said the rise in temperatures was due to delayed sea breeze. “With a north, north-east (land breeze) factor prevailing under the influence of North Arabian Sea’s high pressure area effect, the sea breeze was delayed and we saw a rise in temperature today,” said Abhijit Modak who runs Konkan weather blog.
In response to the escalating temperatures, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has rolled out precautionary measures to help residents combat the heatwave. Suggestions include carrying water bottles while traveling, donning protective headgear like caps, utilising umbrellas for shade, and wearing sunglasses to shield against harsh sunlight. As Mumbai braces for hotter days ahead, proactive measures and awareness campaigns are crucial in mitigating the impact of rising temperatures on public health and well-being. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, seek shade whenever possible, and take necessary precautions to cope with the impending heatwave conditions.
