Gurugram Targets 24 Highway Black Spots For Safer Travel
Gurugram is undertaking a targeted road safety review across 24 accident-prone locations on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, or NH-48, after earlier interventions reduced the number of identified black spots from 32. The exercise is significant for a corridor that carries intense daily commuter and freight traffic, linking residential, commercial and industrial zones across the National Capital Region.
Traffic officials and technical teams are examining each location to identify the infrastructure and operational factors contributing to crashes. The review includes road geometry, lane markings, signage, lighting, visibility, pedestrian movement and traffic management. The objective is to move beyond accident response and address the physical conditions that repeatedly create risk. The focus comes amid a sustained road safety challenge in Gurugram. Official figures cited in the review show 1,115 road accidents and 472 fatalities in 2025, compared with 1,019 accidents and 478 deaths in 2024. The numbers underline a wider urban concern: expanding mobility and high-speed corridors can deliver economic connectivity while also increasing exposure to serious crashes when pedestrian access, junction design and traffic speeds are poorly aligned.
The Gurugram highway black spots currently under review include locations around Kapriwas, Manesar, Panchgaon, Rampura, Vatika Chowk, Khandsa, Shankar Chowk and the stretch between Ambience Mall and the Sirhaul border. Several of these areas combine heavy traffic with bus stops, crossings, commercial activity or movement between urban settlements and high-speed road infrastructure. A technical assessment is now being prepared to determine the interventions required at individual sites. These could include improved warning signs, rumble strips, safer pedestrian crossings, better night-time visibility and other engineering changes. The approach is important because a standard solution is unlikely to work across locations with different traffic patterns and road conditions.
For the Gurugram highway black spots, the next challenge will be implementation and monitoring. Road safety improvements need coordination between traffic authorities, highway agencies and civic bodies, followed by regular checks to establish whether crashes actually decline. For a rapidly urbanising corridor, safer roads are also a question of equitable access. High-speed infrastructure must serve not only private vehicles and freight movement but also pedestrians, public transport users and workers crossing between neighbourhoods. The success of the current effort will therefore depend on whether safety upgrades become a sustained part of highway management rather than a one-time response to accident data.
