Gurugram Six Lane Underpass Brings Faster City Connectivity
Gurugram is set to add a major road infrastructure upgrade near the Millennium City Centre Metro Station, where a six-lane underground corridor is planned to improve traffic movement at one of the city’s busiest junctions. The 1.35-km facility aims to reduce delays, separate long-distance traffic from local movement, and strengthen links between key residential, commercial and transport corridors.
The proposed underpass will come up at the intersection connecting Sectors 27, 29, 43 and 44, an area that experiences regular congestion due to high commuter movement and proximity to the metro network. The project, with an estimated investment of ₹55.46 crore, is expected to be completed within 18 months. The Gurugram six lane underpass has been designed to create a smoother flow for vehicles travelling towards the Southern Peripheral Road and other major urban routes. By shifting through traffic below ground level, authorities aim to reduce pressure on surface roads and improve movement for pedestrians, public transport users and daily commuters. Alongside the underground section, a parallel six-lane surface road will continue to support local traffic, allowing shorter trips and neighbourhood access without interfering with vehicles passing through the corridor. Urban mobility experts note that such separation of traffic streams can improve road efficiency when integrated with public transport planning and pedestrian-friendly design.
A senior infrastructure official said the project reflects a broader effort to increase road capacity while addressing mobility challenges created by Gurugram’s rapid expansion. The city has witnessed significant growth in commercial hubs, residential developments and employment centres, increasing demand for reliable transport connections. The Gurugram six lane underpass also includes environmental measures aimed at improving long-term resilience. Two rainwater harvesting systems are planned along the route to support groundwater recharge and strengthen stormwater management. These measures are particularly significant for urban areas facing recurring concerns around waterlogging during intense rainfall events. Solar panels will be installed to support the facility’s energy requirements, reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources during operations. Such features indicate a growing shift towards infrastructure projects that consider both mobility needs and climate-related challenges.
Urban planners highlight that transport upgrades in growing cities must balance vehicle movement with wider public needs, including safety, accessibility and sustainable land use. Improved connectivity around metro stations can also support economic activity by making workplaces and commercial zones easier to access.
