Gurugram Jaipur Highway Goes Toll Free With MLFF Shift
Commuters travelling between Gurugram and Jaipur will soon experience a smoother highway journey as the entire NH-48 corridor adopts barrier-free toll collection from August 1. The upgrade, completed with the rollout of the Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system at Shahjahanpur in Rajasthan, removes the need for vehicles to stop at toll booths and marks a major shift towards technology-driven highway mobility.
The 270-kilometre Gurugram-Jaipur route is among the busiest intercity corridors in North India, connecting major employment centres, industrial zones and tourism destinations. The introduction of the MLFF system is expected to reduce delays at toll points, improve traffic movement and make daily travel more predictable for thousands of commuters and commercial vehicles. Under the new system, vehicles passing through designated toll zones will be identified through FASTag technology and automatic number plate recognition cameras. The applicable toll charge will be deducted digitally without physical barriers interrupting traffic flow. The move is part of a wider transition towards smarter transport infrastructure, where reducing congestion also contributes to lower fuel consumption and fewer vehicle emissions. Urban mobility experts note that faster highway movement can improve productivity for logistics networks while reducing travel stress for individuals who depend on the corridor for work and business.
The Gurugram-Jaipur stretch had several toll locations undergoing technology upgrades in phases. With Shahjahanpur now integrated into the network, the corridor becomes fully operational under the MLFF model. The remaining transition towards a completely barrier-free Delhi-Jaipur route will depend on upgrading additional toll points, including the relocated Khedki Daula facility. The expansion of NH48 barrier free tolling also reflects changing priorities in India’s transport planning, where digital systems are increasingly being used to improve infrastructure efficiency rather than only expand road capacity. Better traffic management can support more sustainable urban growth by making existing road networks work more effectively. Highway authorities have advised motorists to maintain sufficient FASTag balances, as failed transactions may lead to electronic notices and additional charges.
