Gurugram’s expanding urban edge is set to gain a major mobility upgrade as work on parallel access roads along the Dwarka Expressway moves into an advanced stage, improving connectivity for thousands of residents living in newly developed sectors near the Delhi border.
Officials associated with the city’s metropolitan development authority said a substantial portion of the service road network has already been completed, while utility installation and lighting work has begun on finished stretches. The project is expected to play a crucial role in separating high-speed regional traffic from local neighbourhood movement, an issue that has increasingly affected daily commuters across emerging residential zones. The planned corridor stretches from the Delhi border to the NH-48 corridor and is designed to run on both sides of the Dwarka Expressway. Urban planners say the service roads are essential infrastructure rather than supplementary additions, particularly in fast-growing areas where residential clusters, schools and commercial projects have developed ahead of supporting mobility systems. The project includes nearly 30 kilometres of combined carriageway and represents an investment of close to ₹100 crore. Authorities aim to complete the remaining construction by September next year, although land-related bottlenecks continue to delay work at select points.
Several sectors along the expressway currently lack seamless local access, forcing motorists to take longer detours or depend on unsafe informal entry routes. In recent years, highway authorities had sealed multiple unauthorised cuts created by commuters attempting to directly access the expressway, citing safety concerns. The new service road system is expected to reduce such risks while improving last-mile connectivity. Urban development experts note that the Dwarka Expressway service roads could significantly alter movement patterns in Gurugram’s peripheral sectors by creating safer interfaces between residential districts and high-capacity transport infrastructure. However, they caution that transport-led growth must be matched with pedestrian pathways, drainage systems, green buffers and public transport integration to avoid repeating congestion problems already visible in older parts of the city. Construction agencies have also begun installing street lighting along completed portions, a move expected to improve road safety and nighttime accessibility.
Mobility analysts say such features are increasingly important in rapidly urbanising corridors where construction activity often outpaces civic infrastructure. At the same time, officials acknowledged that land availability remains a major challenge in some pockets. In certain locations, the expressway alignment and surrounding green belt restrictions have complicated execution, requiring coordination between multiple government departments. Areas near utility infrastructure and treatment facilities are among the affected segments. The Dwarka Expressway service roads are likely to influence both property movement and commuting behaviour across sectors adjoining the corridor. As Gurugram continues to absorb population and real estate growth, the effectiveness of such supporting infrastructure will determine whether the city can transition toward more organised and resilient urban expansion rather than fragmented sprawl.
