Gurugram’s urban mobility landscape is poised for a transformative shift as the Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) advances its Phase 1 metro expansion.
The project, estimated at ₹1,286 crore, encompasses a 15.2 km elevated corridor featuring 14 stations, stretching from Millennium City Centre to Sector 9, with a spur extending to Sector 101 on the Dwarka Expressway. In a significant development, GMRL has secured clearance from the Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) to utilize over 5,800 square meters of land for constructing 10 of these stations. These land parcels are crucial for integrating essential infrastructure components such as entrances, staircases, and lift access points.
The broader vision encompasses a 28.5 km corridor, including the Basai spur, which will eventually link Millennium City Centre to Cyber City through 27 stations, at a total estimated cost of ₹5,452 crore. To facilitate the construction process, HSVP has allocated 5.25 hectares in Sector 33 for GMRL’s casting yard, which will be instrumental in producing precast metro components. The tender for Phase 1 is scheduled to open on May 15, with GMRL also in the process of finalizing the general consultant for the project.
The integration of the Bakhtawar Chowk underpass into the project has necessitated adjustments in the construction timeline, with civil work now expected to commence in June. The underpass alone is projected to cost ₹60 crore. This metro expansion is not merely an infrastructural endeavor but a stride towards sustainable urban development. By enhancing connectivity and reducing reliance on private vehicles, the project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions, aligning with the broader goals of creating eco-friendly and equitable cities.
As Gurugram continues to evolve as a major urban center, the successful execution of this metro project will be pivotal in shaping a more sustainable and accessible urban environment for its residents.
