Gurugram Metro Corridor Triggers Fresh Footbridge Review
Gurugram is set to remove two pedestrian footbridges on the Umang Bhardwaj Chowk–Basai stretch to clear space for the planned metro alignment. The decision affects daily crossings near schools and residential sectors, while raising a broader planning question: how can rapidly expanding transport networks avoid repeatedly replacing infrastructure built only a few years earlier?
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has approved the dismantling of the two structures, allowing Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) to proceed with work along the corridor. One bridge is located near Alpine Public School in Sector 9, while the other is near Greenwood Public School in Sector 10, close to Basai Pond. The bridges were constructed in 2023 under a wider road improvement package. Their relatively short operational life makes the decision significant beyond the immediate construction requirement. For urban planners, it highlights the cost of designing roads, crossings and mass-transit infrastructure in isolation rather than as parts of one long-term mobility network. GMRL will fund the dismantling and handle the movement and storage of recovered material. It must also construct two replacement footbridges along the metro corridor, with their final locations subject to GMDA approval. That condition is important for residents and students who currently depend on grade-separated crossings to navigate busy roads.
The immediate concern is pedestrian continuity. Communities in Sectors 9, 9A, 10, 37C and 37D could face longer or less convenient crossings while construction progresses. Urban transport specialists say temporary pedestrian routes, adequate lighting, accessibility for people with disabilities and safe crossings for schoolchildren should be planned before demolition begins rather than added later. The issue also has a bearing on the city’s wider real-estate growth. Gurugram’s expanding residential and commercial districts increasingly depend on reliable public transport and safe last-mile connections. RERA itself does not govern the dismantling of these public footbridges, but the episode reinforces the wider need for infrastructure planning to keep pace with development approvals and housing expansion.
The proposed metro network covers 28.5 km with 27 stations, linking Millennium City Centre with Cyber City and connecting established neighbourhoods with employment hubs. Official project documents also identify first- and last-mile connectivity as part of the wider transport objective. For Gurugram, the next test is therefore not simply building the metro faster. It is ensuring that each construction stage preserves safe movement for people already living, studying and working along the route. Replacement footbridges will need to be delivered in step with the works so that a connectivity project does not create a temporary mobility gap.
