The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has drawn up a plan to build a three-lane flyover and a three-lane underpass at RD City Chowk to ease traffic congestion on one of the city’s busiest junctions. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 140 crore and will require approval from Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini before detailed design work begins.
RD City Chowk is located near the Millennium City Centre Metro station and handles more than 100,000 vehicles a day, according to the report. Traffic volumes are particularly high because the junction connects Golf Course Road, Golf Course Extension Road, Gurugram-Sohna Road and the IFFCO Chowk side of MG Road.
The proposed underpass will connect the Millennium City Centre Metro station side with Golf Course Extension Road. A three-lane flyover is planned between Golf Course Road and the Gurugram-Sohna Highway. GMDA has framed the two structures as a combined intervention for separating traffic movements through the junction.
Morning and evening congestion currently leads to long queues at RD City Chowk. Vehicles can take between 10 and 15 minutes to cross the junction during busy periods, the report said. Traffic police have also diverted vehicles approaching from Kanhai village and sectors 44, 45, 46 and 51 through a slip road to reduce pressure on the main intersection.
Under the existing arrangement, diverted vehicles use a U-turn between RD City Chowk and Z Chowk before returning towards the junction and continuing towards Golf Course Road or Golf Course Extension Road. The arrangement reflects the complexity of traffic movements around a junction that serves both major road corridors and the metro station area.
The proposed project is not yet at the construction stage. GMDA will first place the plan before the chief minister for approval. If permission is granted, the authority will appoint a consultant to prepare the detailed project report, which will establish the final design and implementation details.
A separate road repair project is also being planned along the route from IFFCO Chowk through Millennium City Centre Metro station and RD City towards Golf Course Extension Road. The repair work is estimated to cost Rs 41.86 crore, and GMDA is currently processing the tender allocation. The authority said it is preparing to begin the work soon.
GMDA Chief Engineer Praveen Chaudhary said the flyover and underpass proposal would be placed before the chief minister for approval and that the estimated cost was around Rs 140 crore. Further construction timelines will depend on approval, consultant appointment and completion of the detailed project report.
