Gurugram Double Decker Metro Shapes New Connectivity
Gurugram: Gurugram’s expanding metro network is set to incorporate Double Decker Metro infrastructure at three major traffic junctions, marking a shift towards integrating transport systems within limited urban space.
The proposal is expected to improve mobility while addressing congestion along key arterial roads, as planners look to balance rapid infrastructure growth with the city’s long-term transport needs. The latest decisions emerged during a review of the city’s metro expansion programme, where officials assessed construction progress and endorsed a multi-level corridor approach for Bakhtawar Chowk, Krishna Chowk and Old Delhi Road. The revised strategy reflects growing pressure on Gurugram’s road network, where widening corridors through conventional land acquisition has become increasingly difficult. The Double Decker Metro concept allows road traffic to continue at ground level while elevated metro infrastructure is developed above. Urban mobility specialists say such designs can reduce disruption during construction, preserve scarce urban land and improve the efficiency of transport corridors in densely built neighbourhoods.
However, they also point out that careful planning around pedestrian access, cycling infrastructure and public spaces will determine whether these corridors become people-friendly rather than simply vehicle-oriented. A significant policy shift has also emerged around Krishna Chowk. Earlier plans had focused on building an underpass, but space limitations prompted authorities to reconsider the engineering approach in favour of an elevated multi-level structure. Similarly, Old Delhi Road, which was not originally planned as an elevated metro section under the detailed project report, is now being examined for an upgraded design to accommodate the proposed alignment towards Udyog Vihar and Cyber City. Alongside these structural changes, authorities have agreed to commission a feasibility study to examine a direct metro connection between Sector 5 station and Gurugram Railway Station. Transport experts have long argued that stronger integration between metro and rail services is essential for reducing dependence on private vehicles and improving regional commuting across the National Capital Region. The study will evaluate engineering feasibility, operational challenges and future passenger demand before any alignment is finalised.
The ongoing metro project currently focuses on the corridor connecting Millennium City Centre with Sector 9, one of the city’s most significant public transport investments in recent years. As Gurugram continues to witness residential and commercial expansion, transport planners increasingly face the challenge of delivering higher-capacity infrastructure without placing additional pressure on already constrained urban land. Urban development experts note that while elevated transport systems can improve connectivity and unlock economic activity, long-term success depends on integrating them with buses, walking routes and last-mile mobility. Without these complementary measures, large infrastructure projects risk delivering faster travel without fully addressing accessibility or environmental goals. As the metro network evolves, forthcoming feasibility assessments and detailed engineering plans will determine whether Gurugram’s next phase of transport investment can deliver a more connected, resilient and citizen-focused urban mobility system.
