Gurugram: Four years after plans were announced to modernise city bus shelters with real-time passenger information, commuters in Gurugram continue to rely on guesswork rather than digital updates. The absence of an operational Bus Information System at bus stops highlights a critical gap in the city’s public transport experience, raising concerns over whether investments in urban mobility infrastructure are translating into meaningful improvements for everyday users.
As Gurugram expands its public transport network to reduce dependence on private vehicles, access to accurate travel information has become as important as physical infrastructure. While dedicated bus shelters have been developed across the city, the lack of electronic display boards means passengers often remain unaware of bus arrival times, route details or service delays, limiting the usability of the network. The proposed Bus Information System was intended to mirror features commonly available in metro networks, where digital displays provide live arrival information and improve journey planning. Urban mobility specialists note that real-time passenger information is no longer considered an optional technological upgrade but a core element of efficient public transport. Without reliable information, waiting times become unpredictable, discouraging commuters from shifting away from private vehicles and undermining wider sustainable mobility objectives. The issue also raises broader questions about the execution of smart city initiatives. Digital infrastructure such as live passenger information systems, surveillance, and integrated monitoring platforms are increasingly viewed as essential public assets rather than standalone technology projects. In the interim, authorities continue to encourage commuters to access bus schedules and live tracking through the city’s mobile application.
