Gurugram: Authorities are preparing to begin the detailed planning stage for the second phase of the SPR Elevated Corridor, a major transport project designed to improve traffic movement between Vatika Chowk and Ghata Mor.
With the detailed project report (DPR) expected to commence next month, the initiative marks another step in Gurugram’s effort to modernise its road network while supporting faster regional connectivity and reducing chronic congestion. The proposed elevated section forms part of a wider strategy to create uninterrupted movement along Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), one of Gurugram’s busiest east-west transport corridors. The route links Dwarka Expressway with Gurugram-Faridabad Road and carries substantial daily commuter traffic, alongside freight and commercial vehicles serving rapidly expanding residential and business districts. Officials associated with the project indicate that consultant selection for the DPR is underway, after which engineering, traffic modelling and alignment studies will begin. The overall programme has been targeted for completion by 2029, although construction timelines will depend on statutory approvals, land-related clearances and funding milestones. The corridor has been divided into two implementation packages. Planning for the first section, extending towards Vatika Chowk, has already progressed, while the second package from Vatika Chowk to Ghata Mor is entering the design stage.
The complete corridor is expected to operate as a signal-free route, supported by a grade-separated interchange at Vatika Chowk to streamline vehicle movement towards Sohna Highway and onward connections with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Urban planners note that the SPR Elevated Corridor could significantly influence mobility across more than 30 residential sectors and several urban villages that have witnessed rapid population growth over the past decade. Existing junctions frequently experience prolonged delays during peak hours as local traffic mixes with regional through-movement, creating bottlenecks that affect commuters, emergency services and commercial logistics. From an urban development perspective, improved traffic flow may also generate wider economic benefits by reducing travel uncertainty for businesses, improving access between employment centres and residential neighbourhoods, and enhancing connectivity to emerging real estate clusters.
However, transport experts emphasise that elevated road infrastructure delivers its greatest value when integrated with public transport, pedestrian infrastructure and last-mile connectivity rather than functioning as a standalone solution. Environmental specialists also point out that smoother vehicle movement can lower fuel consumption caused by prolonged idling, although sustained improvements in air quality ultimately depend on reducing dependence on private vehicles through stronger multimodal transport networks. The project represents another major investment in Gurugram’s evolving transport infrastructure, but its long-term success will be measured not only by faster journeys, but also by how effectively it supports safer streets, efficient public mobility and balanced urban growth. As planning advances over the coming months, attention will increasingly shift towards execution timelines, construction management and ensuring that mobility gains are delivered without creating prolonged disruption for residents and businesses.
