Delhi: Safety shortcomings on the Delhi Meerut Expressway are drawing renewed attention after key road guidance features remained absent weeks after resurfacing work, raising concerns over commuter safety on one of the National Capital Region’s busiest transport corridors.

The issue has highlighted the need for infrastructure maintenance to keep pace with expanding road networks that support regional mobility and economic activity. The expressway, which connects Delhi with major urban centres in western Uttar Pradesh, accommodates more than two lakh vehicles every day. While recent resurfacing has improved pavement quality on sections of the route, the absence of fresh lane markings has created operational challenges, particularly during night-time travel and adverse weather conditions. Road safety specialists note that clearly visible lane markings are fundamental to maintaining lane discipline and reducing collision risks, especially on high-speed corridors designed for uninterrupted traffic flow.Transport experts also point to the lack of reflective road studs and adequate visual guidance systems that help motorists judge carriageway boundaries after dark. On expressways where vehicles routinely travel at higher speeds, such deficiencies can increase driver uncertainty and reduce reaction time, affecting overall traffic safety.

The concerns extend beyond lane discipline. Several emergency assistance call boxes installed along the Delhi Meerut Expressway and adjoining stretches of National Highway 9 are reportedly non-functional or damaged, limiting access to immediate support during vehicle breakdowns or accidents. Although mobile connectivity has become widespread, emergency roadside communication systems remain an important backup, particularly during network outages or emergencies where rapid assistance can save lives. Urban mobility planners argue that resilient transport infrastructure depends not only on new construction but also on sustained maintenance of safety assets. Functional emergency systems, clear signage and consistent road markings form part of a comprehensive road management strategy that supports both commuter confidence and efficient emergency response. Another issue affecting motorists is the limited availability of designated lay-bys where vehicles can safely stop without obstructing traffic.

In the absence of such spaces, drivers experiencing mechanical failures or medical emergencies may be forced to halt on the carriageway shoulder, increasing the likelihood of secondary accidents and traffic disruption. As traffic volumes continue to grow across the National Capital Region, such gaps in roadside infrastructure are becoming more visible. Officials associated with the highway authority have indicated that faulty emergency call boxes will be repaired, while explaining that dedicated stopping bays are incorporated based on project requirements and available land. Traffic enforcement authorities have also continued to discourage motorists from parking along expressway shoulders, warning that roadside stoppages compromise both traffic flow and road safety. As Delhi and neighbouring NCR cities continue investing in faster regional connectivity, transport analysts believe equal emphasis must be placed on maintaining safety infrastructure after construction is completed. For rapidly growing metropolitan regions, reliable road markings, emergency response facilities and safe stopping areas are increasingly viewed as essential public infrastructure rather than optional additions, supporting safer, more resilient and people-centred mobility networks.
