Gujarat Jail Bomb Threat Triggers Statewide Security Sweep

A bomb-threat email received by Gujarat’s Director General of Police office on November 3 triggered security checks at prisons, government offices and other public locations across the state, including Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Jail, according to a report by Divya Bhaskar. Police said checks had not found any suspicious object so far.

The email reportedly referred to the 2008 attacks and carried a message describing a “big surprise” for the Indian government. It threatened the DGP office in Gandhinagar, a collector’s office and a temple, after which security agencies began inspections at multiple locations. The threat was reportedly sent in the name of Khalistan, though the report does not provide details about an identified sender or the status of any investigation into its origin.

At Sabarmati Jail, bomb-detection personnel and a dog squad conducted checks. The prison houses high-security inmates, including gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and terror accused, making it one of the key locations examined after the email was received. Police teams also carried out checks at prisons in Vadodara and Rajkot.

The reported response extended beyond prisons. Police teams, including the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad and dog squads, conducted surprise inspections at the district service complex in Mehsana. The checks were described as a security exercise, after which normal functioning resumed at the office.

At the Patan district collector’s office, public entry was temporarily stopped while police teams searched the premises. Access was restored after the inspection. Patan Superintendent of Police V.K. Naik said the security check at the collector’s office had been completed and that teams were subsequently sent to other designated locations, including the sub-jail, for mock-drill activity, the report said.

The incident comes about a week after bomb threats were reportedly sent to eight schools in Ahmedabad, including institutions in Satellite, Chandkheda and Ambawadi. The earlier threats also referred to a Diljit Dosanjh concert scheduled at Narendra Modi Stadium on November 21. The report said those threats had targeted Narayan Guru School, Podar International School, Vidya Bharati School and C.N. Vidyalaya among others.

The latest security operation has temporarily brought prisons, administrative offices and other public facilities under heightened scrutiny. The available report states that checks were continuing at designated sites and that no suspicious object had been found at the locations inspected so far.
