Gujarat Jail Bomb Threat Triggers Security Sweep in Ahmedabad, Rajkot

A Gujarat jail bomb threat has triggered security checks at the Ahmedabad and Rajkot central jails after the Gujarat Director General of Police’s office received an email warning that prisons in the state could be targeted. Police, crime branch personnel, bomb-disposal teams and dog squads were deployed following the message, according to a report by Nav Gujarat Samay – Ahmedabad.

The email reportedly referred to the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts and included the phrase “2008ને ભૂલશો નહીં, મોટું સરપ્રાઈઝ આપવામાં આવશે, વેટ એન્ડ વોચ”, translated as “Do not forget 2008, a big surprise will be given, wait and watch”. The message also contained slogans referring to Pakistan and Khalistan. The report described the language as provocative and said the reference to the 2008 attacks had prompted heightened security attention.

Teams from local police, the crime branch, the Bomb Disposal and Detection Squad and the dog squad reached the Ahmedabad and Rajkot central jail premises after the threat was reported. The checks covered the jail compounds, internal barracks and surrounding areas. Security arrangements were increased, with people and vehicles entering the premises subjected to detailed screening.

The report also identified the Rajkot facility as the central jail in the Popatpara area. It said the threat email referred not only to the two named facilities but to jails across Gujarat. The reported response therefore involved both immediate searches at the Ahmedabad and Rajkot prisons and a wider alert within the state’s security and home-administration machinery.

The Gujarat Cyber Crime Cell and the State Intelligence team have begun examining the source of the email. Investigators are attempting to establish where it was sent from and identify the relevant internet protocol address, according to the report. The investigation is also examining whether the message was linked to a terrorist organisation or was sent by other individuals or groups to create fear.

The report did not state that explosives had been found at either jail, and it did not report any arrests in connection with the email. Its account centred on the threat received by the DGP office, the precautionary searches and the effort to trace the message’s digital origin. Further details about the sender, the authenticity of the threat and any subsequent police action were not available in the supplied report.
