Gujarat Jail Bomb Threat Triggers Security Sweep in Ahmedabad, Rajkot

A Gujarat jail bomb threat has triggered heightened security at Ahmedabad and Rajkot central jails after the Gujarat Director General of Police’s office received an email warning that prisons across the state could be targeted. Police, intelligence and bomb-disposal teams have begun searches and increased checks at the facilities, according to Nav Gujarat Samay.

The email reportedly referred to the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts and carried slogans including “Pakistan Zindabad” and “Khalistan Zindabad”. It also contained the message, “Do not forget 2008, a big surprise will be given, wait and watch,” the report said. The threat has prompted Gujarat’s Home Department and security agencies to move to an alert posture.

Local police, crime branch personnel, bomb detection and disposal squads, and dog squads were sent to Ahmedabad Central Jail and Rajkot Central Jail after the email was reported. The teams searched the prison compounds, internal barracks and surrounding areas as part of the security response.

The checks include scrutiny of vehicles and people entering the jail premises. Security arrangements at both facilities have been strengthened, although the report did not state that any explosive device had been found. The warning itself has not been described as a confirmed attack, and authorities are investigating whether it was intended to create panic or was linked to an organised extremist group.

The Gujarat Cyber Crime Cell and State Intelligence teams are examining the email’s source, including the IP address from which it was sent. Investigators are also assessing the language and references in the message to determine whether it has any connection to a genuine terrorist threat or was sent by individuals seeking to cause alarm.

The immediate response places prison security, cyber investigation and emergency coordination at the centre of the incident. Further action will depend on the findings of the searches and the technical investigation into the origin of the email, according to the report.
