GreenLine Mobility Solutions Ltd, part of Essar’s green mobility initiative, has announced plans to expand its fleet by adding 1,000 Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trucks by March 2025. This ambitious expansion aligns with India’s overarching goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and underscores the country’s commitment to transitioning away from diesel in long-haul trucking, a major contributor to urban pollution.
Currently operating over 500 LNG-powered trucks, GreenLine aims to play a pivotal role in decarbonising India’s logistics sector, which has been under increasing scrutiny due to its environmental impact. Each of GreenLine’s robust 55-tonne LNG trucks can transport a 40-tonne payload and cover distances of up to 1,200 kilometres on a single tank, highlighting their efficiency compared to traditional diesel counterparts. The CEO of GreenLine, stated that the company has achieved a remarkable 30% reduction in CO2 emissions over the past two years, equating to a substantial decrease of approximately 6,722 tonnes of carbon emissions. This achievement not only contributes to cleaner air but also resonates with the growing demand for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) compliant solutions among corporates. Clients include industry giants like Tata Steel, Vedanta Group, and Reliance, who are increasingly prioritising sustainability in their supply chains.
In tandem with this growth, the Indian government has proposed a draft policy encouraging the conversion of one-third of long-haul trucks to LNG by 2030. This initiative aligns with GreenLine’s mission to not only meet client demands but also to lead the way towards a greener future. To further enhance their commitment to sustainability, GreenLine is investing in training programmes for drivers, ensuring they are equipped to optimise the performance of LNG technology. Additionally, the company plans to introduce Electric Vehicles (EVs) for short-haul transport, thereby broadening its portfolio and addressing diverse client needs. Public sentiment around these initiatives is overwhelmingly positive. Many view the shift towards LNG as a necessary step in combating climate change and reducing urban air pollution. As the logistics sector evolves, the focus on sustainable solutions is becoming not just a corporate responsibility but a societal expectation. GreenLine’s proactive approach exemplifies how businesses can leverage innovation to create a cleaner, greener future while still addressing the practicalities of modern transport needs.
