Greater Chennai Corporation Launches Mechanised Cleaning for Public Spaces
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced the launch of mechanised cleaning services for bus shelters and footpaths. The first phase of the initiative will see 30 machines deployed across various zones in the city. This effort is particularly focused on areas around schools and colleges, with the aim of maintaining cleaner and safer public spaces.
The initiative marks a significant step towards upgrading the city’s sanitation services, using water jets to thoroughly clean high-traffic areas. Officials from GCC have confirmed that each zone will receive two machines, which will be responsible for cleaning bus shelters and footpaths, thus enhancing both the aesthetics and hygiene of these public spaces. Additionally, work is already underway to upgrade the footpaths and bus shelters near schools, with improvements also beginning in areas near colleges.
These developments are expected to not only improve the visual appeal of the city but also reduce health risks caused by accumulated dust, waste, and debris in these areas. In tandem with this mechanised cleaning drive, GCC has been active in clearing encroachments on footpaths to ensure the smooth functioning of public spaces. Recent drives focused on removing obstructions along roads such as Tondiarpet High Road, Madha Church Street, and Walltax Road, among others.
However, the civic body clarified that the encroachment clearance was not directly linked to the commencement of the mechanised cleaning initiative. While the focus has been on high-traffic areas, some GCC councillors have pointed out that not all zones saw the encroachment removal drives in their areas on Tuesday. Despite this, the general sentiment remains positive towards these efforts, as they contribute to the cleanliness and accessibility of public spaces.
This project aligns with the larger vision of the GCC to create a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment. By implementing modern solutions like mechanised cleaning, the corporation aims to meet the growing demands for public health safety while also contributing to a greener, eco-friendly future for Chennai.
