The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has stopped construction activity at a site near Park View on Vandemataram Road in Gota after a land cave-in and the collapse of a wall at the Shyona Tilak-3 residential complex raised concerns about the safety of surrounding buildings. The civic body said only protection-wall construction and ground levelling would be permitted while the matter is examined.
The AMC’s estate officer said excavation had previously begun at the under-construction site without an officially approved plan. According to the civic body’s statement, municipal authorities had already stopped that work earlier. The latest action follows the collapse of soil near the site and damage to a wall belonging to the nearby housing complex.
The incident has brought attention to the safety risks posed by excavation around occupied residential buildings. At construction sites, deep or poorly managed excavation can affect adjoining soil and structures, particularly where protective measures have not been completed. In this case, the AMC said its immediate priority was to protect nearby buildings and prevent a larger incident.
The municipal authority has therefore allowed only work related to constructing a protection wall and levelling the surrounding area. All other construction activity has been ordered to stop immediately. The restriction is intended to stabilise the site and reduce the risk to homes and residents in the surrounding area, the AMC said.
The civic body also indicated that the matter could lead to legal and punitive action against the builder responsible for violating construction rules. The estate officer said further steps would be taken after discussions with the competent authorities. The statement did not specify the name of the builder, the extent of the excavation or the exact nature of the action proposed.
The episode highlights the enforcement challenge faced by municipal authorities when construction begins before approvals and safety arrangements are in place. An approved plan is a basic regulatory requirement, but the Gota case also shows that stopping unauthorised work does not by itself resolve the immediate structural risks created by excavation. Authorities must still secure the site, protect adjoining buildings and determine responsibility for any damage.
For residents of Shyona Tilak-3 and nearby properties, the immediate issue remains the stability of the affected area and the completion of protective work. The AMC said no construction other than the protection wall and levelling would continue until the next course of action is decided in consultation with senior and competent authorities.
