MUMBAI | September 8, 2026 — The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has set a maximum speed limit of 20 km/h on the extended section of the Mrunal Tai Gore flyover in Goregaon after vehicle skidding incidents and a collision involving a heavy truck raised concerns about road safety on the newly opened structure.
The restriction applies to the section running between Ram Mandir Road and Relief Road, parallel to Swami Vivekanand Road in Goregaon West. According to the civic administration, the flyover has four bends, and the speed limit was fixed on the recommendation of consultants to reduce the risk of accidents.
The flyover was opened to traffic on June 7. It faced criticism soon after opening, with videos circulating on social media showing loose gravel, an uneven road surface and sections of the surface reportedly sinking under the weight of a motorcycle stand. The civic administration subsequently smoothed the surface.
However, the administration later observed that the surface had become excessively smooth, causing vehicles to skid. Two-wheeler riders were particularly vulnerable during rain, when some reportedly lost control while negotiating the flyover’s bends.
On August 28, a dumper driver lost control of the vehicle and struck the flyover’s barrier and soundproofing structure. Part of the barrier fell onto the S.V. Road below. On the following day, videos showed several two-wheelers skidding at the same location, including at least three riders falling while turning, according to the report.
The civic administration has urged motorists to follow the 20 km/h limit strictly. It has also said that additional directional and warning signs will be installed on the flyover. Existing signs indicating the speed restriction and bends were installed according to designs provided by consultants.
A separate incident involving a heavy goods vehicle occurred near the Swastik Masala shop on Ram Mandir Road on August 28. Three soundproofing panels on the extended section fell after the truck struck them. The disaster management team and fire brigade removed the panels from the site.
Traffic police have registered a case against the truck driver at Goregaon police station. The civic administration said the driver fled the scene after the collision. The next steps announced by the administration are the installation of additional signage and enforcement of the revised speed limit on the flyover.
