Train services on the Kharagpur-Balasore rail section were disrupted after four wagons of a coal-laden goods train derailed near Rampura in West Bengal on Sunday afternoon, damaging the railway line and overhead electrical equipment. No casualties were reported.
The derailment occurred near level crossing number 11 in the Rampura area under Narayangarh police station, between Narayangarh and Benapur stations. The goods train was travelling from Odisha towards Kharagpur when the four rear wagons left the track. Two of the wagons reportedly fell a considerable distance away from the railway line.
The incident blocked the down line and affected train movement on the section. Railway authorities began operating trains on the up line in the evening, but services across the route were expected to face delays. The damage to both the track and overhead wires added to the operational disruption.
Engineers and officials from the Kharagpur division reached the site after receiving information about the derailment. Railway teams began efforts to remove the four derailed wagons and repair the affected infrastructure.
Nishant Kumar, senior divisional commercial manager and public relations officer of the Kharagpur railway division, said all trains on the section would be delayed. “Train movement on the up line has started. The incident is being investigated,” he said.
A railway source cited in the report said restoring train movement on the down line before nightfall was considered unlikely. The authorities were working to complete the track repairs and restore normal train services as quickly as possible. The cause of the derailment had not been established in the supplied report.
