Goa Police Grapple with Surge in Drunken Driving Incidents

Goa has experienced a significant spike in incidents of drunken driving, with the traffic cell of the Goa police reporting a notable increase in violations.

Over the course of just three days, an average of 50 drunken driving cases were recorded, signaling a concerning trend that authorities are keen to address. According to a police official, a special enforcement drive conducted between last Friday and Sunday, spanning from 8 pm to 11 pm, resulted in the registration of 150 violations. This surge in incidents becomes even more pronounced when compared to the same period last year, with statistics revealing a fourfold rise in drunken driving cases. From January 1 to June 9, a total of 2,318 cases were booked, a stark contrast to the 535 cases reported during the corresponding period in the previous year.

In response to this concerning trend, authorities have issued a stern reminder to the public, urging individuals to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol. Emphasizing the importance of road safety and the prevention of accidents, officials stress the need for responsible behavior to ensure the safety of all road users. The consequences of drunken driving offenses are not to be taken lightly, as highlighted by recent legal actions taken against offenders. Thus far, three individuals have been subjected to simple imprisonment by various courts, accompanied by fines ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000.

Under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, drunken driving is explicitly defined and carries significant penalties for offenders. Individuals found driving with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 30mg per 100ml of blood, as determined by breath or laboratory tests, face imprisonment for up to six months, a fine of Rs 10,000, or both for a first offense. Subsequent offenses incur even harsher penalties, including imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of Rs 15,000, or both. In light of the escalating number of drunken driving incidents, the Goa police have intensified their efforts to enforce road safety measures and deter individuals from engaging in reckless behavior. Through rigorous enforcement and public awareness campaigns, authorities aim to mitigate the risks associated with drunken driving and promote safer road practices for all.
