Girgaon Chowpatty Ganesh Visarjan drew thousands of devotees on Friday, with roads around the beach filling up as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and other agencies deployed crowd-control, emergency and public-service arrangements.
Devotees began arriving at Girgaon Chowpatty from the morning for the immersion of Ganesh idols. The area witnessed processions accompanied by drums, traditional instruments, lezim performances and other cultural presentations, creating heavy movement around the beach and adjoining roads.
Loksatta reported that thousands of Ganesh idols had been immersed across Mumbai without disruption since the morning. At Girgaon Chowpatty, the number of idols arriving for immersion and the accompanying crowd continued to rise through the day, with the immersion activity reaching its peak in the evening.
The BMC arranged lighting, drinking water, temporary toilets, first-aid facilities and ambulance services at the beach to reduce inconvenience for devotees. The civic body also established a wide-ranging disaster management room for the first time at the site so that different agencies could coordinate quickly in the event of an emergency.
Crowd management and security were handled through arrangements involving multiple agencies. Roads adjoining Girgaon Chowpatty were reported to be packed with people, making movement through the area difficult as processions converged on the immersion point.
The arrangements reflect the scale of the operational challenge at one of Mumbai’s most prominent immersion locations. A single site must accommodate processions, pedestrians, idol movement, emergency vehicles, sanitation services and public facilities at the same time. The BMC’s provision of medical support, ambulances, water and temporary sanitation infrastructure was intended to keep essential services available during the crowd build-up.
Processions included traditional musical groups despite restrictions imposed by the court on instruments and loudspeakers, according to the report. Several mandals also included lezim and cultural performances alongside the traditional instruments, adding to the activity and duration of the processions.
The immersion operations at Girgaon Chowpatty were continuing amid the large gathering, with civic and security agencies maintaining their arrangements for devotees and coordinating responses at the site.
