Ghaziabad Police Outpost Blast Triggers UP ATS Terror Probe

The Ghaziabad police outpost blast outside the Vasundhara outpost has triggered a joint investigation by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad, local police, forensic teams and bomb-disposal personnel after a Kashmir-linked outfit claimed responsibility on social media.

The explosion occurred around 9pm on Friday near the outpost in Ghaziabad’s Indirapuram area. It damaged the facility, shattering windowpanes, damaging air-conditioners and cracking a wall. No police personnel were injured, although a sub-inspector inside the outpost at the time escaped unharmed.

A 20-year-old food delivery executive, identified as Vishal and a resident of Arthala, sustained minor injuries while passing the outpost. He was treated and was reported to be stable.

An ATS team led by DIG Abhishek Yadav reached the site on Saturday and began examining the blast along with the bomb-disposal squad, forensic experts and local police. Investigators are assessing whether an explosive object was thrown at the outpost from the adjoining elevated road, which runs around 35 feet above the facility.

CCTV footage from the elevated corridor and nearby areas is being analysed for suspicious movement before and after the explosion. A Delhi-registered scooter found near the scene is also being examined as part of the investigation.

The probe intensified after an X account named “Ghazi-2” circulated a purported claim of responsibility on behalf of an outfit calling itself Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen Hindustan. According to the report, the group shared a video featuring a masked individual speaking in Urdu and Hindi and claiming that the attack was directed at the police. An English-language statement was also circulated.

Investigators are checking the authenticity and origin of the material. The social media account was reportedly deleted shortly after the video and statement appeared. Officials are also examining whether the claimed outfit has any connection with networks allegedly linked to Pakistan-based operative Shehzad Bhatti.

The group is described in the report as largely unknown to security agencies, although investigators are examining similarities with the activities of Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan, an outfit previously associated with threats and claimed attacks targeting police personnel and stations in Punjab. The UP ATS had recently acted against an alleged Bhatti-linked module in Uttar Pradesh, a case that was later transferred to the National Investigation Agency.

Officials have not established that the blast was a terror attack. The exact nature of the explosion will be determined after scientific examination of samples collected from the site. Investigators are keeping all possibilities, including sabotage and accidental ignition, under consideration.

The incident also places attention on the security challenges created by elevated urban corridors, which can provide visibility and access to spaces below them. In this case, the road’s height, proximity to the police outpost and CCTV coverage are central to the ongoing reconstruction of events.

The area remains cordoned off while ATS, forensic and local police teams continue to identify the source of the explosion, verify the online claim and establish who was responsible.
