Ghaziabad Road Widening Plan Targets Three Congested Trans Hindon Routes

Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation has begun work to widen three major roads in the Trans Hindon area—Indirapuram, Brij Vihar and Wazirabad Road—with an estimated cost of ₹18 crore and a target completion period of three months. The plan involves removing existing roadside cycle tracks, expanding the carriageway and constructing footpaths to ease peak-hour congestion.

The municipal corporation said the roads face increasing traffic pressure as the population and number of vehicles in Trans Hindon continue to grow. Limited road width has led to long queues during the morning and evening rush, affecting office commuters, schoolchildren and other passengers travelling through the area.

Work has already started on Wazirabad Road. According to the information provided by the municipal construction department, the existing cycle track is about four feet wide. After its removal, around three feet of the available space will be used to widen the road, while approximately one foot will be allocated for footpath construction.

Ganeshilal, an assistant engineer in the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation’s construction department, said the cycle tracks were being removed at some locations because their use was relatively low and the restricted road width was affecting traffic movement. The corporation has not provided traffic volume figures or details of a replacement cycling facility in the supplied information.

N.K. Chaudhary, chief engineer of the construction department, said the move was intended to provide relief from traffic jams. “The cycle track is being removed to provide relief from traffic jams. After its removal, the roads will be widened and footpaths will be constructed. This work has started from Wazirabad Road,” he said, according to the report.

The three roads are important links for neighbourhoods across Trans Hindon, where congestion during peak periods can increase travel times and create bottlenecks around residential and commercial areas. The corporation expects road widening to improve vehicle movement on the affected stretches and benefit nearby localities.

The decision also places attention on how road space is being allocated between moving traffic, cycling and walking. The project details supplied by the corporation focus on widening the carriageway and building footpaths after removing the cycle tracks. However, the municipal authorities have not specified whether dedicated cycling infrastructure will be provided elsewhere or how pedestrian movement will be protected during construction.

The corporation has set a three-month target for completing the work. Wazirabad Road will be the first stretch to undergo the changes, while the remaining work is planned on the Indirapuram and Brij Vihar roads. Further implementation details, including the construction schedule for each road and traffic arrangements during the work, were not included in the report.
